what is it?

Originated by Harrison Owen, Open Space Technology is a way to convene a group that invites participants to take control of the agenda and outcomes by "opening space" for individual creativity and power.

It is appropriate and effective in situations where a diverse group of people must deal with complex and potentially conflicting material in innovative and productive ways. It is particularly powerful when nobody knows the answer, and the ongoing participation of a number of people is required to deal with the questions.

the promises

When convening a group using Open Space Technology, the following results typically occur:

1. Every issue of concern to anybody will have been raised, if he/she took responsibility for doing that.

2. All issues will have received full discussion, to the extent desired.

3. A full report of issues and discussions will be in the hands of all participants.

4. Priorities will be set and action plans will be made.

All too often when coming together for planning retreats we desire these outcomes but fall short of the goal. Open Space cuts through disproportionate emphasis on less important agenda items and needless discussion by putting the power for innovation, decision-making and implementation directly in the hands of those responsible for outcomes.

be prepared to be surprised

You will be amazed at how quickly you can tackle complex problems and the creativity of the solutions that emerge when using Open Space.
